Deathspank Review

Quick Info
Overall Rating: 8.5

ESRB: Rated T for Teen

Genre: RPG, Action/Adventure

A tale of a hero, his adventures, and wise cows.

Deathspank. The only hero I know in which I can't describe in one word. He is adventurous, strong, a hero to all, and wears a purple thong. When Deathspank popped up on the Playstation Store, I was a bit skeptical. Especially when I found out that the game was supposed to be 'humorous', because that usually turns me off. However, I played the limited demo for Deathspank and was impressed. Soon en
ough I was going through the Playstation Store to purchase the full game. Deathspank is one funny RPG that will keep you playing for hours.

The Artifact
The plot of Deathspank involves an artifact known as, The Artifact. It has unknown powers, and is hidden in an unknown location. Through the entire game,
you are trying to get your hands on The Artifact. In the first 1-2 hours of play you will retrieve the artifact, but soon have it snatched from some Orque bullies. This le
ads to the rest of the game which you will have to rescue
orphans and gain access to Lord Von Prong's castle. Overall, it's a storyline that will keep you pretty intrigued.

A 3D Hero In A 2D World
You will read this in other reviews, but it's something I have to mention. The graphics in Deathspank are very unique. Deathspank (the character) and others are presented in 3D artwork. However, the scenery and background of everything else is in 2D. This gives Deathspank an original feel that separates in from other games. Not to mention the world of Deathspank is pretty large for a downloadable PSN game.

Got RPG?
If not anything else, Deathspank is a Role-playing Game. The weapon/armor system was done well. You can equip potions and weapons to various buttons (X, Circle, Triangle, Square, and direction buttons). This allows you to have at least 4 weapons available for variety in fighting. It also allows you to have a variety of potions for battle, and there are tons to choose from including speed potions, stealth, critical attack, and element resist potions. The leveling system was also done well, but simple. You level up starting at 1 and can max at 20. Every level you get to pick a 'hero card'. These hero cards allow you to increase block time, melee damage, range damage, and increase movement speed to help you out in quests and adventures. Each level your attributes, like health, will increase automatically rather than choosing them.

Unimportant Things I Need To Do
Side quests are one of my favorite things about the game. By the end I had over 120 quests (side and main) done and still had more to go. The game is just packed with extra content. Side quests help you level up, and give you a large variety of rewards (weapons, potions, and money). If the story doesn't interest you then the side quests will keep you busy as more than 80% of your game time will go towards side quests. Every quest you do will go into a section in your quest log labeled 'Things I Have Done'. You can also use fortune cookies you find on the ground to give you help on quests, side and main.

Nothing Is Perfect
I understand that no game is perfect. However, I need to mention this so RPG fan boys don't get disappointed. This game is not a full blown RPG. It has RPG features, like leveling and getting skills. The game does not focus on character customization. You will not find yourself making hard decisions on Deathspank's character, and any decisions you make doesn't affect the play that much.  Also, some quests will drag on while some will require level grinding, but nothing too bad.

DLC/Sequel
I can tell you now that there will either be DLC or a sequel for this adventure RPG. At the very end of the game there is an insane cliffhanger. However, it does not involve the main story, so don't be worried, you are still getting a full game that has a beginning and an end.

The Wrap
Deathspank is one enjoyable experience that should not be passed up. With a $15 price tag you shouldn't expect much, but the game will satisfy. It does have some flaws, but runs smoothly for the most part. Missing out on Deathspank is like missing out on free cake, it's free so it's not so bad if you miss out, but come on...it's cake.
